Roll Cages and Tote Bins: Two Pieces of Equipment, One Supply Chain System
Roll Cages and Tote Bins: Two Pieces of Equipment, One Supply Chain System
Most equipment decisions are made one product at a time: cages for transport, totes for picking, each specified in isolation. But the best-run UAE supply chains treat them as a single system, because that’s how stock actually moves. The tote organises and protects the product; the cage moves the totes. When the two are dimensionally matched, the result is a standardised unit flow from pick face to shelf edge with almost nothing lost in between.
What Each Piece Does Best
Tote bins are the organising layer. Unlike open industrial storage bins or generic stackable storage boxes, GLS attached-lid containers (ALCs) come with integral hinged lids, self-draining lid design, and tamper-evident clips with laser-etched sequential numbers. They’re ideal for split-case picking, small and high-value items, e-commerce orders, and any flow where product needs to arrive counted, sealed, and intact.

Roll cages are the movement layer, and the roll cage storage layer. As a storage cage on wheels, the same unit that transports stock also holds it at the DC, in the back of store, and on the shop floor, cubing vehicles efficiently and travelling from DC to shelf edge with one person pushing. What cages don’t do on their own is organise loose or small items — which is exactly the gap totes fill.

Separately, each is useful. Together, they cover the two jobs every distribution operation has to do: organise the stock, and move the stock.
Designed to Fit Each Other — Literally
This is where integration stops being a concept and becomes a dimension sheet.
The GLS Four Sided Rollcage with Split Gate is built around the standard 600 x 400mm tote footprint: it holds two totes side by side, stacked up to three high — six organised, sealable units per cage face. The two-piece split stable gate means staff access the top totes without opening the full cage, keeping the rest of the load secure.

The same logic runs through the wider GLS range. Merchandise picking trolleys are sized to carry 600 x 400mm totes side by side for in-store and DC picking. ASRS-compatible totes extend the same standardised-container logic into automated storage and conveyor systems. One consistent equipment language, carried through every stage of the chain.
What the Combined System Delivers
Security from pick to shelf. Totes are sealed with numbered tamper-evident clips at the pick face; cages can be sealed for transit. High-value and sensitive lines — electronics, pharma, tobacco, cosmetics — travel with two layers of protection and a clear audit trail.
Less damage. Product is contained in rigid totes, and totes are contained in rigid cages. There’s no shrink wrap to fail and no loose cases shifting in transit. In GLS’s Dubai trials, roll cage distribution alone cut product damages by around 20%; totes extend that protection to item level.
Faster, cleaner replenishment. The cage rolls to the aisle; staff lift out one tote at a time and work directly from it. Empty totes nest or stack back into the cage for the return leg — a built-in reverse logistics loop with no cardboard to break down and no waste to dispose of.
Standardisation across sites. When every DC, vehicle, and store works with the same tote and cage footprints, planning gets simpler: predictable cases per tote, totes per cage, and cages per vehicle. That consistency is what turns equipment into a system.
A genuine sustainability gain. Both components are reusable across thousands of cycles, replacing single-use cardboard and shrink wrap. GLS plastic products are 100% recyclable at end of life — a circular model that aligns with UAE retailers’ sustainability commitments without adding operational cost.
Start With the Flow, Not the Product
The right question isn’t “which cage?” or “which tote?” — it’s “how should a unit of stock travel from pick face to shelf?” Answer that, and the equipment specification follows: tote footprint, cage configuration, vehicle fit, and return loop.
That’s how GLS approaches every engagement — as an equipment solution, not a product order.
